Machine Washable Carpet Runners – A Buyers Guide

Machine Washable Carpet Runners – A Buyers Guide

Carpet runners around the home are invariably used in high traffic areas, meaning that over the course of a year that get a large amount of wear. It’s important therefore that unless you want to be replacing your carpet runner every year that you make the right decisions when you purchase your carpet runner. This article takes a look at what you should look for when you a purchasing machine washable carpet runners.

Materials

Like normal rugs washable carpet runners come in a multitude of different materials but all are not made equal when it comes to durability. The ideal material for a washable carpet runner to be made from is a man made material such as Polyamide/Nylon, Polyester or Polypropylene. All of these materials are not only washable (at low temperatures) but they are also very resistant to staining in the first place, so you will have to wash it less in the first place. If you prefer to be eco friendly and go for more sustainable materials you can buy cotton washable carpet runners but these will pick up marks and scuffs much easier than the man made material, that said, if you are looking for a carpet runner in a low traffic area then a natural cotton one could be ideal.

Design

Like normal rugs machine washable carpet runners come in all sorts of designs and colours and we can’t really recommend to you what sort of washable carpet runner design would fit in with your home. However there are some features of the washable carpet runners which are best avoided in the home environment. For instance, you will find that almost all of the washable types of rugs come with a latex backing. In some cases this latex backing is used as a design feature and protrudes around the outside of the mat by about an inch, and is usually black in colour. In our opinion this looks just a little bit industrial and you may want to consider a mat that doesn’t have this feature.

The black latex/rubber edge can look a bit industrial

With no latex edge washable carpet runners look much better

Anti-Slip or Non-Skid

The latex backing of these machine washable carpet runners offers another advantage over regular rugs – they grip to any floor really well. In areas where rugs on the floor traditionally posed a hazard – such as rooms with tiled floors – the latex backing of these washable rugs makes them the ideal choice. It is for this reason that you will now find a myriad of anti-slip kitchen carpet runners on the market all of which don’t need an additional ‘non-slip’ map purchasing to go underneath them. Best of all, these anti-slip kitchen carpet runners are machine washable too so you don’t need to spend a lot of money on getting them dry cleaned.

Size

You might think ‘great – the age of machine washable carpet runners has begun I can line my 30’ hallway and not have to go to the expense of getting it dry cleaned…’ However, before you get carried away consider the size of you washing machine – you would be surprised at how bulky some of these washable carpet runners can be. Their latex backing can be quite stiff and therefore squeezing a large rug in to a regular sized washing machine can be a struggle. For a regular sized washing machine we would recommend not buying a rug over 16 square feet.

So to summarise if you are looking to purchase a machine washable carpet runner consider the following:

  • Materials – Buy a manmade material such as Polyamide/Nylon, Polyester or Polypropylene
  • Design – Unless you are looking for a washable carpet runner to be used as a doormat then avoid the ones with the black latex or rubber boarder.
  • Anti-Slip/Non Skid – Machine washable rugs are ideal for areas with tiled or hard floors
  • Size – Unless you have a big washing machine don’t buy a washable carpet runner bigger than 16 square feet

Choosing a Theme for Your Dinner Party

29 Apr

Choosing a Theme for Your Dinner Party

One of the most fun parts of entertaining your friends is choosing an appropriate theme. Although you can simply call up a few couples and invite them for a casual get-together, it is much more interesting to give your party a particular subject or theme.

One of the easiest kinds of themes is the calendar. Then all you need to do is think of appropriate seasonal décor ideas. For example, during Easter, you can base your table settings, decorations and centerpieces on Easter bunnies or put pretty little colored eggs together as a table decoration. During the month of October, Halloween centerpieces would be the order of the day, while in December you would base your ideas around Christmas.

But if there is no upcoming festival, holiday, or personal day such as a wedding anniversary or birthday, what kind of theme can you give to a friendly party just to jazz it up a bit? There are plenty of ideas. For example, how about going floral? You could use flowery tablecloths, with a dried flower table arrangement or small vases of flowers on the tables as centerpieces. If you are using more than one table, each table could represent a different kind of flower. You would also decorate the walls with pretty little nosegays or bouquets.

Alternatively, you could be somewhat more exotic and use an African table setting. This is not as difficult as it sounds and can make for an interesting evening. African meals are eaten with the fingers, so you would have to find the appropriate recipes. Set the table with bright Sahara colors, such as red, yellow, gold, fuchsia and turquoise. For decorations, the key is natural materials. Ideally, buy a few African woven tablecloths, napkins, placemats and plate holders for the traditional look. For authenticity, use wooden or pottery plates and decorate everything with beads. Wooden napkin rings with printed African napkins are another integral part of this style. Traditionally, at African meals the dishes are eaten from one plate, and everything is laid out all at the same time, saving you much fuss and serving time. For a centerpiece, put a wooden bowl full of different African spices, tropical fruits, beads and flowers on the table to give that extra African flavor.

Other examples of national themes are Asian table settings, French, or American styles. Similar to the African theme above, you would try to follow national decorations and base the menu on that particular country’s cuisine.

If other nationalities don’t interest you, how about taking a specific time period, such as trying to set up a Victorian table, with silver or silver-plated cutlery, elegant china dishes, and lace tablecloths. You might have to do a little research here to come up with an authentic menu, but it could certainly make for an interesting evening. To add to the atmosphere, you could light the room with mock gaslights, like in the Victorian era and decorate the walls with playbills and embroidered samplers as was done at that time.

Coffee Makers That Fit Your Schedule

Coffee Makers That Fit Your Schedule

Some people only want to drink the nicest quality coffee they can buy, and others are just looking for that morning caffeine fix. Pretty much the only general rule you can draw around coffee drinkers is that everybody wants their coffee to fit into their schedule. Whether you drink a single cup of coffee a day or an entire pot, you wants to brew it in as efficient a manner as possible. So when shopping for a coffee maker, here are a couple of the things that’s all coffee drinkers need to consider.

One of the bigger decisions you need to make is deciding how much coffee you need to brew at once. The traditional coffee maker is very good at brewing anywhere from 2 cups to 12 cups of coffee at once. Sure, this will probably work more or less for everybody. It is especially convenient if you work at home or have the coffee maker somewhere that you can consistently fill your cup throughout the day.

But before you go out and get that Viking coffee maker that you have had your eyes on, what if you only drink one cup of coffee a day? Or what if you like the idea of brewing the coffee as you need it? There are a number of coffee makers on the market today that brew coffee a cup at a time. There are machines where you just pour a little bit of water and coffee into them, put your cup underneath it, and hit start. There are also Keurig machines that use k cups, which are small plastic cups full of coffee. You just put the sealed cup into the machine and press start. These machines are great if you do not know how much coffee you plan on drinking, if you only need one cup, or if you are particularly forgetful about cleaning the machine. Not having a coffee pot makes cleanup easier.

Quality of coffee is a factor as well, but actually, it is more important to buy quality coffee than it is to worry about the machine itself. Fantastic coffee brewed in a regular drip coffee maker is going to be delicious. Poor coffee brewed inexpensive machine is still going to taste poor. The efficiency and quantity of the coffee is a more important factor.

So whether you intend to buy big containers of coffee at once or just buy cheap k cups to put in your Keurig machine, once you make the decision on the coffee maker, it should fit into your daily schedule much better.

Seagrass Rugs for the Home

Seagrass Rugs for the Home

Seagrass rugs are a popular choice for people wanting a hardwearing rug whilst maintaining a natural appearance. Their neutral colors make them an ideal accessory for many homes regardless of the décor. Seagrass area rugs look great on carpet, wood or tiled floors and this play a large part in their universal appeal.

What is sea grass?

Many people know what a seagrass rug looks like, but they certainly don’t know what seagrass actually is, so lets take a look…Seagrass is actually a form of sea weed that grow naturally in many shallow costal water where it can get enough light to maintain its self and can benefit from the nutrients in the water and sea bed. It performs many ecological functions and is actually in global decline despite its ability to flourish readily. This however does not mean that you need to worry about the source of seagrass for your rug though as the vast majority of seagrass that make up rugs are grown in flooded paddy fields in China.

When the seagrass is harvested it is dried and then spun in to yarn, at this stage it is ready to be tuned in to a beautiful rug.

Why does it make such a good material for a rug?

Unlike fibrous shag rugs or fluffy flokati rugs a sea grass rug is a hardwearing durable addition to any home. It cannot be described as a pile because is more of a weave than a pile and this is what gives it its inherent strength. It short tightly wove nature makes it an ideal rug to be used in areas of high traffic – any mud or debris can be allowed to dry and then it can be vacuumed out of it. The fact that seagrass is a natural material means that there is variation in the appearance of it and this means that it will hide marks and stains easily. It should be noted however that it is very resistant to stains and marks anyway but if you would like the added security some manufacturers will offer the opportunity of an added stain protection.

Most seagrass rugs come with a latex backing which makes them naturally non-slip so if you have a laminate floor a seagrass rug can make it much more pet friendly. Any rugs in high traffic areas such as hallway rug runners made from sea grass will also benefit from this non slip backing and save the hassle of you having to buy a separated non slip backing.

Styles of seagrass rug?

The color of all seagrass rugs – as you would imagine – tends to be the same because they are made from sea grass. Variation of styles occurs though in the weave pattern and the edging detail. Any good seagrass rug will have an edging stitched in to it which can be up to six inches deep. It is in this main edging that the style of the rug is defined as there are many different options available. Many of the more expensive rugs will have leather or suede edging that is available in multiple colors – be wary of the material that you choose though because it is this part of the rug will stain far easier than the seagrass element of it. Having suede edging in a hallway for example would probably be a bad choice. Cheaper seagrass rugs will have not edging and you will be presented with the raw edge of the seagrass rug. For the more natural home this can look very good.

What are the alternatives?

There are a couple of alternatives to the seagrass material that give the same look and offer the same practical features. Jute rugs for example look very similar but their fibres come from a plant and not seaweed. If you were looking for a contemporary rug for your bedroom you would be well advised to opt for a jute rug because it is much softer to the touch than seagrass.

Sisal rugs are also sometime mistaken for seagrass and are often reffered to as sisal seagrass rugs. Like jute sisal is completely different from seagrass and that term is therefore is a contradiction – there is not such thing as sisal seagrass. Sisal does offer a number of advantages over seagrass – the big one being that it can be easily dyed so you can get it in a number of colors but it will still maintain the hardwearing capability of seagrass. Sisal rugs can also be woven much tighter which makes them ideal for use in an office where caaster will be rolled over them.

In conclusion if you are looking for a natural alternative to the plethora of shaggy rugs on the market at the moment then look no further than a natural seagrass rug. They look beautiful, are easy to care for and very durable.

Keeping your Home Warm with a Draught Excluder

Keeping your Home Warm with a Draught Excluder

During these cold winter months we must do all we can to insulate our homes not only for our well being but also in terms of energy efficiency and the environment. Research shows that the key areas of heat loss from our homes come from poorly insulated windows, lofts and doors which of course makes sense as these are the main in/outlets. Even if you are not the most active environmental supporter (which of course you should be), keeping your home insulated efficiently can considerably help lower your bills leaving you a fair few extra pounds to use for other things. So much money is wasted and sent off into the ozone causing bad things to happen. It doesn’t make sense, why contribute negatively to the environment as well as to yourself? By helping one you will in tern help another and the benefits are tangible.

There are many ways you can save here and there, one of which is the use of draught excluders. As I said previously, the doors are a prime target for unwanted draughts so by using door draught excluders will certainly keep your home toasty in these wintry conditions as well as helping the environment and also adding an attractive accessory to your home.

There are so many various types of draught excluder on the market. If you wanted a more functional fitted device there are products that fit to the underneath of your door with bristles that will allow for a certain amount of uneven space under the door itself. Fitting bits and pieces to doors can be a specialist job as millimeters do come in to play especially if fitted on the underside like the draught excluder. Floors can be uneven, the door can also be uneven so a few millimeters can hinder the effectiveness of the door closing. You would be well advised to seek professional help on this one just going on experience!

An alternative would be a material option. Hessian or canvas material is probably more suitable for this job as it is harder wearing – bearing in mind it is going to be placed by your door that invariably opens and closes it will see a lot of movement so it’ll be best to go for a harder wearing material that cotton for example. Material draught excluders can be very endearing – I have seen wonderful ones from a row of sheep to silly snakes but I have also seen just relatively plain or simply patterned ones. Whatever your taste, there is an option to meet your needs. The tartan varieties are timeless but if you wanted to go for something to inject a bit of personality into your home I would research into some of the cute fluffy critters that are coming onto the market.

Why not make your own door draught excluder?

Why not? You don’t even have to have a sewing machine! They are easy to make – This way you can personalise the draught excluder yourself. Whether you want to make a simple sausage material version or get your creative juices flowing by coming up with a more interesting design using old fluffy toys? What a great way to reuse some old items and making them into something useful! I would in this case recommend taking the toys apart (perhaps in half length ways) and stitching the front together with another one side by side etc.. until you have a long line of them. Do the same with the backs (or other halves) and stitch the two halves together so you will end up with a sausage then just stuff it with dried peas or rice or simply just with pillow stuffing and secure the end with a few stitches.
If that sounds like too much effort you could cut out a long strip of your chosen material so that when you roll it it will be enough to create a sausage, turn it inside out and stitch down the one side – You will then end up with a tube. Cut out two disk shapes for either end and stitch one onto the end. Then all you have to do is stuff it and sew on the end of the draught excluder. There may be hundreds of different ways to come up with a draught excluder with a bit of difference you just will need to give it a bit of thought. If you wanted to be able to wash it, it maybe a good idea to incorporate a zip into the seam.

Letterbox draught excluder

This is yet another way precious heat can be lost. The letterbox in your home can be a terrible waste of energy so thinking about options to help retain the heat may be advisable. Again, there are bristle options which will certainly help to keep loss to a minimum but there is also a unit that has a metal plate on the back of your letterbox so that the only time heat can be lost is when the postman delivers and the plate will flap up to allow the post to pass. I think most letterboxes today have this, but some older examples I know of do not. It may be worth looking into solutions. Alternatively a curtain behind your front door will certainly help this problem.

Shaggy Rugs Help to Add Texture to a Well Designed Room

A shaggy rug helps to add texture and can pull together a room in a nice contemporary way. Rugs that are thick and warm can be an attractive feature of your special area. With many textures and styles to choose from, an array of eye catching designs can be achieved. It can be as easy as adding a contemporary rug.

Thick plush rugs are often desired to add softness, warmth and texture to a room. These are made of many materials such as microfibers, soft cottons, felt, wool and sometimes the cleaning is a easy as throwing the rug into a washing machine. Rugs may be combination of these fibers, which can make any area comfortable and inviting. Shaggy rugs are often a favorite choice for warmth, durability and for that pampered feel. Modern shag is most commonly manufactured from polyester or nylon. The softness of plush shag rugs with the added easy care of the man made fibers is an attractive choice for many.

Whether an affordable choice is preferred or an expensive, designer label is desired, with a quick search of the internet, a large selection of soft, luxurious rugs are quickly at hand. Flokati rugs are sold online and are contemporary and well made. The choices are numerous with many having stripes and bold designs. Consumers may even wish to custom order a specific shape or size and that is just one of the reasons why customers love this product.

Contemporary homes and offices will benefit greatly from the addition of both soft and hard surfaces. Nothing looks nicer than a leather sofa and a thick shaggy rug. The smooth and hard lines of the sofa will blend well with the soft, shaggy look of the rug. With the addition of a few plants and recessed lighting, a completely modern feel is soon achieved. Any table and work areas should be kept minimal and clean in appearance and clutter should be kept at bay. Shelves and hidden compartments work well to keep all the day-to-day items out of the way, when not in use.  The ability to create an interior design that reflects the personalities of the homeowners is top priority and many consumers today are wishing for accessories, which have a good practicality with pets, have easy cleaning instructions and are cost efficient.

Rugs have been used in homes for centuries and in the past where purely functional in form.  Today, rugs are much more than just a foot wiping area like hallway rug runners. A well placed rug adds depth to your design and interior designers will go to great lengths to find that special rug that will enhance their room design.

The Chinese have been rug makers since the beginning of time and the skill and craftsmanship they have achieved has made the Chinese rug a favorite amongst people all over the world. Oriental rugs and carpets are bold in color and with many designs involving scroll work and floral patterns. For centuries the Chinese have been manufacturing their beautiful rugs be weaving them by hand.

Safety should also be a concern. Hardwood floors will require a rug with a slip proof backing. Please be sure to always read the descriptions of the rugs carefully and completely, if it is being purchased online. Many throw rugs are backed with a special material to grip or “hold onto” the hardwood floors to keep a secure foot as it is being walked upon.

Shaggy rugs can also create a calming, peaceful environment. A light cream shag rug can brighten a dark room while maintaining a balance of color. Large or small, thick plush or lightweight, a shag rug that is modern and flexible, is the must have of any cherished space.

A consumer can expect to pay anywhere from under $30 to over a $100 depending on size, the material a rug is constructed of and whether it is a designer label. The ability to machine wash is a much desired feature for easy cleaning, which is a requirement for some consumers; however, delicate rugs should be professionally cleaned. The smart consumer will take the time to research online sites for product details, which include what material was used in the construction of the rug and which cleaning option, are recommended.

A shaggy rug helps to add texture and interest to most modern interior room designs. The selections and prices are consumer friendly in these economy thrifty times and shoppers are in the best position to buy goods at lower prices than at any other time in recent history. The only hard part will be deciding on color, size and style.

Frequently Asked Questions about an Illuminated Bathroom Mirror

Illuminated bathroom mirrors are mirrors that come with self-lighting options. These mirrors light up the space around them so that you can see your image clearly.

How useful is an illuminated bathroom mirror?

Illuminated bathroom mirrors have a number of uses. The most obvious use is that they do not rely on the natural or bathroom lighting fixtures to reflect your image. This helps if you have a badly lit bathroom or if you have a bathroom with lightings that do not illuminate the mirror properly. Using these mirrors, applying makeup and shaving becomes very easy.

These mirrors also look very elegant, stylish and sophisticated. You must have seen them being used in bathrooms of your favorite stars in some or the other movie. Therefore, if you want to give your bathroom a high-class Hollywood-ish look, then these mirrors are your best bet.

In addition, these mirrors give an ambient light that helps to create a soothing atmosphere in the bathroom. When you just want to relax in your bathtub or take a rejuvenating hot bath, then you can simply turn the lights of the mirrors on and enjoy your bath with soft and soothing lights.

These mirrors are really easy to maintain as well. Since the lights are generally behind the mirror, the front is kept smooth and easy to clean. Therefore, these mirrors do not demand any special cleaning up as such.

What are the various options available in illuminated bathroom mirrors?

There are many options available of varying sizes, shapes and designs in illuminated bathroom mirrors. There are the oval, rectangular, or circular shapes from which to choose. The most popular though is the round mirror shape. However, if you want an innovative shape, then you can get it custom-made as well.

As far as the size is concerned, it all depends on the size of your bathroom as well as the space available in it for installing a mirror. If you have a small bathroom, you should preferably go for a small mirror with soft lights. However, if you have a large bathroom, then you can even go for a large wall mirror with bright lights.

In mirror designs, there are endless options again. Some of the more popular options are art deco mirror, Venetian mirror, cheval mirror, etc. You can choose any of these designs depending on your budget, taste and preferences.

For more functionality, you can also opt for mirrors that have an in built cupboard. These mirrors are really helpful for those who do not have enough storage space in their bathroom. These cupboard mirrors can greatly help one in organizing one’s cosmetics and bathing accessories and preventing cluttering in the bathroom.

What to look for while buying an illuminated bathroom mirrors?

One should be very careful while buying these mirrors so that one’s investment does not go down the drain. The first consideration is of course of lighting. You should preferably go for low voltage lights to save on your electricity bill. So, do check the voltage and power consumption of the mirror while buying.

If you are worried about the steaming up of mirror on winter mornings and are always wondering how to stop steaming up of your mirrors, then illuminated mirrors have an interesting solution for you. There are some illuminated mirror models that have halogen lights installed. These halogen lights heat up the mirror. This condenses the steam and the mirror remains as easier to see as it ever was.

In addition to this, you should look for warranties if any. Try to look for a branded mirror even if that costs you more. This is because a branded model would have a long life and it would therefore prove to be more inexpensive than a cheap mirror in the longer run and larger picture.

Where to buy illuminated bathroom mirrors?

You can buy these mirrors both online as well as offline. Generally speaking, there are more options to discover on the web than in the market, and that too at cheaper prices. Therefore, it is recommended that you buy these mirrors on the Internet.

What is the price range?

The price of illuminated bathroom mirrors ranges between $100 and $350. There are also options that are cheaper than $100 for those how are tight on budget.

What Are Flokati Rugs?

3 Nov

What Are Flokati Rugs?

A Flokati rug adds a touch of comfort and warmth to any room. They are the original shag rug, though the fibers used in these rugs is leagues above the common synthetic materials that many people associate to shag.  These rugs are generally made from all-natural sheep’s wool.  These lush and elegant floor pieces are available in any style, color and come in a range of fabric weights.  The necessary touch to any room, true style and taste emulate from these rugs.

Flokati has a long history, dating back to the fifth century A.D.  Originating in the Greece village of Samarina, these rugs have more history and tradition than many westerners would believe possible.  The shepherds of Samarina were known for their goats and sheep, originally owning them for dairy and meat.  Their sheep and goats were the village’s main commodity, long before the invention of Flokati. The winters in the high Pindus Mountains were Samarina is located can be very cold, with some temperatures falling below zero.  The resourceful shepherds began experimenting with different ways to protect themselves from the cold using their sheep’s wool, and the ancestor of Flokati was born.

Flokati is not just a typical woven wool fabric though.  The Flokati that is cherished today was actually devised by mistake.  A shepherd had actually left his blanket in a cold mountain stream and forgot about it for two days.  Upon remembering his property, he rushed back to retrieve it. Pulling it out of the stream, he realized that one side of his blanket had become felted.  When a fabric is felted, it literally means that the fabric loses its loose weave and has bound more tightly together through pressure and water, becoming felt.  The other side of the blanket, that had been on the opposite side of the stream’s current had come raveled and unwoven.  Years of tweaking and perfecting, this accidental process has cultivated the modern and now world-famous rug style loved by many.

These shaggy rugs are not only comfortable they are visibly interesting.  Differing from most other styles of contemporary rug, especially the popular and much shorter Chinese style of rug, these rugs are unique and extravagant.  The shag rug that gained so much popularity in the seventies fell out of favor due to cheap imitations flooding the market.  True Flokati has never lost its touch of class or its appeal.

Because of its fine hand-made qualities, Flokati should not be treated like a common rug.  These rugs do require special treatment for them to maintain their lush appearance.  First of all, these rugs should never be vacuumed.  Instead of being vacuumed, there is an easy three step process in caring for Flokati rugs.  First, they should be carried outside and beaten to release any excess dirt and debris.  When carrying these rugs, owners should take care as they can be very heavy.  After beating the rug, let it air out for a while.  The natural fibers of the rug need to be refreshed and brisk, outdoor air is best for them.  Do not place the rug in direct sunlight though, as the color of the rug may fade.  The third step is to wash the rug.  Smaller rugs may be placed in the washing machine, on the gentle cycle.  Larger rugs need to be hand washed.  To hand wash, hang the rug up for easier access.  Once hung, spritz cold water over it and then brush it.  To brush it, a dog brush may be best, as they generally have a wider area between bristles.  While brushing, begin in the center of the rug and work towards the outsides.  Brushing the rug will rejuvenate its texture and quality.  Let the rug dry before moving it back to its place, remembering again that the rug will be heavy.  While this seems like an extensive process for a rug, owners of Flokati know that it is worth it.  Items of true quality often take a little more care than a similar item made of cheaper materials and Flokati is no different.  Maintaining the rug’s luscious feel is worth going through this process a couple of times a year.

If considering a Flokati rug, owners probably do not want to put these rugs in high traffic areas such as hallways where rug runners are far more practical.  These rugs are as much of a part of the interior decorating as any expensive vase or lamp are, and they are not make for continual treading.  Pet owners with animals who shed a lot may also want to think about this rug choice, as they will attract pet hair.  However, these rugs are more of an investment than a typical rug, their style and texture are an immediate improvement to any room.  While they may not be practical for some owners, they are beautiful and long lasting for those who spend the right amount of care in their upkeep.

Consider choosing this as an alternative to your current storage method, and you will definitely be happy that you did. As will your shoes!

Shopping for a New Contemporary Rug

Shopping for a New Contemporary Rug

Everyone loves to decorate their home in a way that reflects their individual personality and style. Visitors and friends should be able to see the personal touch of the homeowner in each room. When one sets out to decorate, flooring should not be forgotten as it plays a prominent role in enhancing the beauty of the room. A well thought out floor covering can transform an otherwise plain area into a stylish and sophisticated room.

A Brief but Interesting History of Rugs

Weaving is traced back as far as 6000 B.C., to excavations, which took place in the area of the Caspian Sea. This was around the same time that people began to learn the art of weaving. A fact many people find amusing is that weaving was initially considered a man’s job, rather than a feminine art. The very first functional rugs were made of rather abrasive materials and were used as cave protection. By the 3rd millennium B.C., Egyptians were adept at making a wide variety of woven rugs and carpets, and may take credit for what we know today as a shag rugs; of course things such as non-slip backing came a bit later in time.

Choosing a Contemporary Rug

When choosing a modern rug one must consider the many styles and how they are classified. Many things factor in to this, including the material used, the manufacturing method, and the rug’s functional use. Rugs can be round, square, rectangle, oval or oblong. They are available in plain, solid colors, or can be purchased in bright patterns, which make a bold statement. Contemporary rugs work well with almost any type of modern decor, and a great place to begin the selection process is identifying the objective for the room in which the rug will be placed. Depending on the material choice, a contemporary rug to match any decor should not be hard to find.

Shaggy rugs work well in rooms with an artistic flair or in which modern art is featured. Flokati rugs are a good choice for sophisticated decor and can be found in synthetic or natural wool. Hand-woven flokati rugs make a valuable investment if one can acquire them.

Chinese Rugs

Chinese rugs have remained a favorite throughout the years and these trends will not likely change as time goes on. They can breathe new life and beauty into a previously bland room, and work well in living rooms, studies, or bedrooms. Intricate patterns and beautiful color combinations are featured with Chinese rugs, making it easy to find one that appropriately matches the other decor in the room.

Hardwearing Rugs

Hardwearing rugs such as wool, burlap, or jute can be found in a wide variety of styles and colors, as well. Many people, especially pet owners and those with small children, choose rugs of a hardwearing nature as they last longer and require less maintenance. These rugs usually feature a rough consistency. If the home is one where visitors or guests frequently sit or lie on the floor, one may wish to opt for softer blend rug, as wool and similar fabrics can be a bit rough on the skin.

Hard Flooring

Some people opt for hard flooring, as these types of floors do not require vacuuming, and spills can be easily cleaned up should they occur. A laminate floor or a wooden floor is a good option in this case since these floors have an appeal all their own, but can also lend themselves easily to a variety of rugs should the homeowner choose this option in the future.

Wooden floors look lovely when paired with oriental or other intricately patterned rugs, and rug runners are an excellent option for bare floor sections not covered by the primary rug. They also help with keeping the overall decor uniform throughout the house. Whatever shape, style, or design one is looking for, will not be hard to find if a few simple tips are followed. First, one should be sure to remember the decorating objective of the room in which the rug will be placed. A rug may look terrific on the sales floor of furniture a store, but once installed in one’s home, may be entirely wrong. Shopping around is essential, as well. It is never in a person’s best interest to buy the first rug he or she finds-even though the sales clerk may think this is a marvelous idea. Another excellent venue for rug shopping is web surfing. The variety of styles that can be found online far exceeds those available in most traditional stores. With a little patience and effort, the ideal rug for anyone can be found.
