Three Ways To Find A Good Deal On A Used Table And Chairs Set

27 Jan

After careful consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of owning a used table and chairs set, you have made the decision to buy one. Now, you need to decide where you are going to go to get it, and you need to make sure that you can get one for a reasonable price. In this article, I will discuss three ways that you can find a good deal on a used table and chair set.

Visit The Yard Sale

If there are any yard sales that are being held in your area, then you should definitely stop by and see what the people there have to offer. Table and chairs sets are some of the most common items up for sale during these occasions. Oftentimes, the seller is trying to get rid of his table and chairs set in order to make room for a brand new one. In cases such as this one, the seller is usually more than willing to negotiate with you on the price so that you can get a good deal and take the table and chairs set off of his hands.

Read The Local Newspaper

You can often find a quality used table and chairs set simply by looking in the classifieds section of your local newspaper. Sellers here are also often more than willing to get rid of a table and chairs set that they don’t need anymore. Most classified ads show the price that the seller wants for his items, but you may find that when you stop by to actually see what he has to offer, the seller is open to lowering his price. If you find any signs of wear and tear on his table and chairs set, then you can notify him of that and use it as a bargaining chip when it comes to negotiating a price.

Check Out The Thrift Stores

You would do well to visit any thrift stores that might be in your area, such as the Goodwill store. These places sell a wide variety of items, often at bargain-basement prices. The neat thing about these places is that many people wouldn’t be caught dead in them because of the unfair stereotypes that have been placed on these stores. This simply translates into more bargains for you. A used table and chairs set purchased from one of these stores can help you implement one of your home office decorating ideas by creating a vintage look.

Yard sales, newspapers, and the thrift stores are all places where you can find a used table and chairs set on the cheap. If you don’t mind negotiating with people, then you can really save some money by going either of these three routes.

A Futon Bed – Not Your Normal Kind of Bed

26 Dec

A Futon Bed – Not Your Normal Kind of Bed

In the West a futon is often thought of as a chair or sofa that converts in to a bed and this is where the confusion begins. A futon sofa bed is in virtually every home now as so it easy to see why we think of futons as being a sofa bed. This concept that we’ve got of futon is wrong, a futon bed is actually just that -  a bed, and it was traditionally used only as a bed to sleep on and not as a piece of daytime furniture to sit on.

The futon bed has a long history as it has been in use for over 4000 years in Japan and China. The futon bed came about because Japanese and Chinese homes tended to be a lot smaller than our western homes – some homes consisted or just one room – so the room would need to be used for many purposes such as eating, entertaining cooking and of course sleeping. In the morning the futon bed was rolled up and stored in a cupboard or oshiire as the Japanese would call it so that they could actually use that room in the day.

You can see from this where the west devised the futon sofa bed from – basically it was a temporary bed that could be folded or stored away when not in use to make the most of the space available in the room. The West has therefore taken the principle a little further by having a bed that still folds up to save space but it converts in to a chair or sofa that can actually be used.

That said you have probably arrived at this page looking for information on futon beds and not sofa beds. The ‘futon’ part of futon bed really is referring to the mattress. There were three criteria that the original futon bed mattress had to fulfil:

  • It needed to fold up – or at least allow for easy storage
  • It needed to insulate from the cold coming up through the floor
  • It needed to be comfortable.

It is these three factors that have led to the futon mattress being constructed in layers of wool felt. Today futons though tend to be constructed of layers of recycled cotton and other flame retardant material. Regardless the material the layered construction means that it is easy to fold yet it can still maintain its shape, has very good insulating properties and was is comfortable. Today you can buy your futon bed constructed from as little as 5 layers which is about 100mm thick all the way through to 7 layers and more that are at least 140mm thick. Generally speaking the thicker the futon bed the more use it can withstand – remember though if you do intend to move it around though it will be heavy. If you want something special creating there are places that will custom build your futon bed to your exact requirements.

If you are seriously considering a futon bed as you main be you may want to consider what you place the mattress on. If it will be permanently out you may want to get a frame for it to live on. You will be able to get a frame that suits the interior of your home as they come in many different styles and different types of wood but what they should all feature though is a slatted base so that air can circulate underneath your futon bed and keep it fresh.

If your futon is not going to be a permanent feature of your room though you may just want to roll it out on the floor. This is how the Japanese or Chinese would have used it but they would have been placed it on a tatami mat which is the traditional Japanese floor covering.
Futon mattresses are not just available as a single layer bed and you can find futon bunk beds too. A futon bunk bed may not be to everyone’s taste but they will certainly provide  a hard wearing bed.

Dining Room Table and Chairs are Essential to Make a House a Home

Dining Room Table and Chairs are Essential to Make a House a Home

Dining room table and chairs are more than just a piece of furniture; it is a place where the family gathers to share time together. Today’s lifestyles have unfortunately taken this special time and minimized it to such an extent that the time that we spend with our loved ones usually comprises of a quick hello in the morning and fragmented meal times in the evening. Just having the presence of dining room tables and chairs gives us more of an opportunity to use it and spend time together.

Not all families have a dining table to eat at and consequently tend to eat with their meals on their laps, which I think is a great shame. Bearing this in mind, if you are on the look out for a dining room table and chair set, there are is certainly a vast array to choose from so you won’t be spoilt for choice.

Dining Room Tables and Chairs for use in a Limited Space

If it is space that is a problem there are space saving options on the market such as drop leaf  tables. A drop leaf table is great if you have a spare piece of wall that the table can be placed flat against when not in use. A drop leaf table will also fit in to the corner or side of your lounge so that when it is not being used as a table. it can be used as a side-shelving unit to put ornaments on. Drop leaf tables can either come as single or double drop version and this means that they can fold down either side to leave a small section in the middle, or they can just fold down one side. The size of dining table when open you require will determine whether you get a double or single fold table. The double is generally going to be bigger though.

Other options for this type of problem would be to get a smaller size of table or a round or circular shaped version. The circular versions, or at least something with a few curves or rounded corners, tend to look more stylish than a straight edged table. Straight edges have their place but I feel that they look quite harsh comparatively and mold into a room less effectively.

Glass dining room table and chairs, look visually less imposing. They create space and are practically undetectable compared to solid oak dining room table and chairs. A glass table is easy to clean and best kept on top of as glass can look grubby but if kept clean it’ll look beautiful. It won’t stain! It is extremely practical for today’s family. Spillages and ‘little Jonny’s’ art session could wreck most tables but glass is ideal for those of you with small children with a passion to create!

Dining Room Tables and Chairs for where Space Isn’t an Issue

Traditional solid oak looking furniture can be a beautiful option. They do look stunning in the right place, especially if you have the space and country cottage feel in your house. They do demand attention though and you will need a large room to accommodate a solid oak dining table and chairs. Turned detailing on this type of furniture is a marvel of the sheer workmanship put into this style and it is indeed represented in the price. This is an investment and a work of art- a center piece in your home.

There are solid oak contemporary options too, which would fit into more modern spaces. These designs do have a blockier feel not in a negative sense, but in a contemporary, simple, Japanese style which can look equally as nice in the right home. Wood is a beautiful option and a real luxury as it looks and feels sumptuous. I will say that it needs looking after and protecting. It will need treating and some need varnishing – I wouldn’t recommend a solid wood version if you do have small children and perhaps the place for this type of table is one for the adults!

Painted Furniture with a Difference

Painted Furniture with a Difference

If we were to say painted furniture to you, what would you think of?

We would think of beautiful, creative, individual and different pieces of furniture. It is so easy to go to a leading furniture outlet and just fork out a lot of money for a chair that has also been purchased by millions around the world. To us, there is no personality in this type of furniture. Of course there is a place for this type of furniture – but in your home we believe you need some individuality and something that’s set your home apart from the rest. So why not take a trip down to your local tip shop or your local auction rooms and have a look around for some interesting pieces of furniture that may take your fancy. After purchasing an item, take it home and have a think about how you would like it to look. Hand painted shabby chic furniture is coming to the forefront of interior design at the moment. People don’t have the money to splash out on pricey furniture in the present economic climate, so why not have a go yourself and get creative!

Start by rubbing down your chair with sandpaper. The idea of painting furniture is to recreate and enhance the original beauty of the item you are renovating. Next, you need to choose a colour you wish to paint your item. I can suggest that black is in fashion at the moment. Black, teamed with a floral accent of colour is a stylish and bold, feminine statement. White painted furniture also has a similar effect but with white it portrays more of a country feel. White painted furniture looks great with duck egg blues and olive greens and greys. Whatever colour you choose will certainly breathe a breath of fresh air and individuality into an old and tired piece.

After rubbing the chair down and choosing your chosen colour, paint on a couple of coats so that you can no longer see the base wood. If you have chosen a chair with a solid board section running across the top of the back of the chair- it would look great with a piece of wallpaper – bright and stylish – preferably floral at the moment and cut it to shape to the back of the chair. Once you have cut out the shape, place onto the back of the chair with PVA. In order to protect the paper, cover with a clear varnish. You can get light varnishes specifically used for fragile work, so I suggest you use that.
Once you’ve completed one item it will spur you on to do other items in your home. Why not try and create your own individual style with all your bedroom furniture. If you like the country look, white painted furniture is a must have in your home. It looks fresh and clean and looks great with all colours and woods.

Painting your furniture using a distressed technique is a great way to achieve a shabby chic rustic and country feel. All you have to do to achieve this is choose a white paint or an off white paint and some other colour – like a grey or a duck egg blue – something that will compliment the very stark white. Then, after rubbing down the chair with sandpaper coat your chair with the darker paint first and wait for it to dry. Once dry, find yourself a stiff brush and put on a small amount of white paint. You will find it is rough to put on – almost needing a slight scrubbing motion – which is why it is aptly named ‘dry brushing’. Be careful not to put too much paint on your brush as you want to achieve that half on brushed look for it to look distressed.

Be creative don’t feel you have to go for the easy route by just passing over your hard earned cash…besides…it’s not as much fun!

What is Reproduction Furniture and Why?

What is Reproduction Furniture and Why?

Reproduction furniture takes on the look and the original design of the traditional furniture but comes with a cheaper price tag. If you love the genuine article and can’t seem to get hold of a particular piece or just simply cannot afford the original then reproduction furniture is definitely the realistic option for you. Only the best reproduction furniture can be crafted using the same materials as how they were originally intended. Usually this type of furniture is hand finished whether that be polished, glazed or upholstered.

Reproduction furniture is probably best known for the regency style of the 18th and 19th centuries or from the early American shaker style although it can also be used with more modern styling. The beauty of any of these styles of furniture is not only shown by the care in the craftsmanship, it is also shown in the accuracy of the original styling. Whatever style of furniture you are after, it can be sourced if not replicated, which is when reproduction furniture comes in to its own. You can commission pieces that are no longer in existence or just if they are too pricey, in order to fit in with your existing furniture, it really opens up the options for you and your home. Materials can be specified and the finish can also be copied allowing you to suitably tie in your furnishings. Antique furniture reproductions are becoming more and more popular particularly in the current economic climate and are well worth taking into consideration when furnishing your home.

Where can I pick up reproduction antique furniture?

If you are on the lookout for a particular period of antique reproduction furniture, I would first suggest your local auction rooms. Auction rooms are a tardice for precious treasures and you can potentially pick up a bargain which it why I will suggest trying this option first. Alternatively, if you have a more of a specific style requirement that you are in search of mail order companies saturate the internet and any style of antique furniture reproductions can be found if you take the time to trawl through them. Be sure to search carefully in order to get the best deals and I would always suggest seeing the item before you buy just to be sure. If you specifically search for your nearest stockist’s or suppliers of this type of furniture you will most definitely find somewhere near you so you can have a look and perhaps pick up your item to save on even more pennies! Try antique shops as well, here you can again find some bargains and also remember to try and get some money off if you don’t mind going for the display model.

What sort of style are you trying to achieve in your home?

It is so nice to have this technique available to us as it is not always easy to come by a specific original piece also at affordable prices. As with all decisions with furnishings, it is important to discover what feel you would like to achieve in your home. You may have an 18th or 19th century house that needs a bit of traditional furniture to bring together the modern style of living with the older more traditional. A one off piece of choice furniture would do this effectively, making it a centerpiece in your home. You can choose from clocks to bedsteads and tables and chairs from any period, each having its own charm.

French reproduction furniture is very in fashion at the moment – Louis XV and XVI period French furniture is elegant and chic and this style has become the modern day ‘shabby chic’ bringing to your home an eclectic heathery haven. Beautifully distressed painted furniture looks feminine and soft especially in the bedroom.

What is Shabby Chic Furniture?

What is Shabby Chic Furniture?

Traditionally, the term shabby chic had been used to describe old, worn out furniture. It was a term to acknowledge its shabby appearance, but the owners want it to seem better than it actually was by adding the ‘chic’. Today, the complete phrase shabby chic does still retain its original meaning but looses the negative aspect. Shabby chic furniture has become a fashion statement, a trend and a style that many interior designers are using in order to create a feminine, elegant and rustic look. This rustic appearance can be achieved by painting and sanding the furniture building it up in several layers.

Modern Shabby Chic Furniture

Shabby chic furniture doesn’t have to have a specific base style– it is more about the technique of making it look old. You can take any modern style of furniture and create a rustic feel with it, but older styles seem to suit this fashion a little better. If you are fond of the simpler style of design, try looking at the early American shaker style. This furniture has clean lines and doesn’t have any intricate scrolling or floral detailing and would be a nice base for trying this effect. You can get hold this shaker style in various places; maybe try your local auction rooms or there are a great deal of places on the internet. Wherever you chose to shop there are great offers out there if you are prepared to search a little and are able to see the potential in a piece.

Shabby Chic Antique Furniture

Antique furniture is where this style really comes to life. I feel that whatever period you chose to either replicate by reproduction methods or chose to buy the original, it will do it justice. Obviously you can use Victorian, Edwardian or even Gothic but I feel that French Baroque furniture suits Shabby chic more closely than other eras.

French shabby chic furniture is beautiful, elegant and it’s intricate designs so expressive. The scrolling of legs and arms and s-bends on the fronts of drawers, add to the sumptuous lines of this style. Shabby chic bedroom furniture lends itself perfectly to this period. The French furniture is painted in white, which accentuates the elegance of the detailing – Perfect for achieving the beauty a chic ladies bedroom deserves. I have seen the professionals style a bedroom in this style with class and elegance and it’s all about mixing whites, olive greens, blacks and duck egg blue hues with a hint of heathery pinks and grey. Mixed together, this palette makes for a calming and soft yet sumptuous space.

Shabby chic kitchen furniture would suit a more stable and heavy style. The Early American Shaker style in this instance would be more suitable in this room as I explained earlier. Its simpler lines would marry in with the more geometric lines of your appliances.

Doing it Yourself

Shabby chic can be relatively inexpensive and easy to replicate. Once you have decided on a style of furniture you wish to furnish your house with, you can begin to style your item(s). We’d suggest you start with a shabby chic white chest of drawers, they look great in any room. The best idea is to get yourself two pots of paint; one white and the other perhaps a pale green or grey to contrast it. Start by rubbing the piece down and then give it a coat of the coloured paint. Once this is dry, ‘dry brush’ on the white so that it ‘scuffs’ over the surface creating a worn look. If you have painted the white paint on a little too heavily, then just gently rub it with some sandpaper to achieve the finished look.

The Beauty of a Glass Dining Table

24 Nov

The Beauty of a Glass Dining Table

A glass dining table is the ideal practical solution if you need a nice, easy and low maintenance option to keep clean. A dining table should be (along side the fireplace) the heart of your home. This is where the family gathers to spend time and discuss day to day things. It is where families laugh sharing jokes and gather around the homemade cooking that mum has been lovingly cooking all afternoon- this is why I feel that the dining table is without a doubt the heart of the home.

In today’s families lives, this image of ‘togetherness’ is becoming more and more scarce and it’s sad to think that the short periods of time that we must grab and take advantage of, we don’t and it becomes an all too familiar scene of the children running in from school, dumping their school bags and grabbing their dinner at random times to everyone else. They then take the food either into their layers or plonk themselves in front of the television and inevitably get lost in a trance mechanically feeding him / herself!

Why a glass dining table and chairs are a good choice

On the subject of children, the option of a glass dining table and chairs has to be the most practical, as it is easier to maintain and keep looking clean and withstands all the abuse a normal child throws at it! Being glass it is easy to wipe all sorts of; paint, food and grime that become attached to it.

The glass table is also a good choice because it is safe. It will have been made from toughened glass, which will give you peace of mind with your little ones. Also, If you are concerned about edges of tables for the same reason, you may want to consider a round glass dining table or even an oval glass dining table – this way there will be no sharp corners and lessen the chances of any accidents.

Another excellent reason why glass is generally a good option is because any type and shape of glass table will inevitably look stylish and will not impose on your room as much as a solid table. If you stick to clear glass, the table is almost invisible to the eye and even though it is there, serving a purpose, visually it blends into its surroundings making it a great option for smaller rooms.

If it is glass that you wish to have in your room but you wanted more of an impact than a clear table you may want to consider black glass dining table. Extremely retro in feel, a black glass dining table would look simply stunning in the correct place. Originally, the black glass was popular in the seventies but today it has come back into fashion adding a contemporary twist to its original staging. Glass does come in different colours so you are of course able to get tables in these hues. If you wanted a pop art sixties feel then why not go for a green or red glass table. This way you can get all of the practicalities of owning a glass table together with the style as well. You will also find that you can get functional tables and an extending glass table is perfect for people that infrequently have guests over for meals.

Finding a simple way to clean your glass

A simple solution of white wine vinegar, water and newspaper is a non-toxic way of cleaning your glass wear. Simply rub onto the glass and use the newspaper to polish off, this will leave the glass with a non smeared appearance. An alternative option is to get an off the shelf cleaning product which will usually come in a spray, you can still use the newspaper to polish it off, which again, will help leave the surface non smeary. You can use this technique to clean any type of glass cabinet, glass table or glass shelves.

Why Choose a Leather Corner Sofa?

Why Choose a Leather Corner Sofa?

If you have a large room that you wish to segment or even if you have a small room you are best off buying for a corner sofa. Corner sofas are so adaptable and can be used in so many ways. A corner sofa gives you the option of changing a layout of a room easier than if you went for a traditional 2 seater sofa shape not just initially but also after months if you feel like a change.

Today, most rooms are not exactly how we’d like them to be set out, so in order to alleviate this we need to go for options that help us with this little conundrum. A corner sofa is one of the most ingenious designs by adding both style and shape and also the imperative of comfort.

Chimneybreasts tend to segment a room directly in the center just so that it makes it more difficult to make a large lounge or living room in to a lounge dining room with two sofas. Having two large sofas around does somewhat restrict what you are able to do with a room with the chimneybreast issue. Maybe you have like us, thought of getting rid of one of you sofas so that you can free up some space to place a dining room table and chairs but it just isn’t feasible as having the space that they provide is always nice for when people come over so you don’t feel as though you have to sit on the floor with the dogs when entertaining!

So try a corner sofa – that is really the best solution to this dilemma and an extremely popular one. By having a corner sofa, you still have the space to provide enough room for a) Your guests  b) Plenty of space to stretch out whilst watching a movie c) More usable area for you to utilize as something else i.e. getting that long awaited dining room table so you won’t have to sit on your original sofas and eat on you lap anymore! You can then get a leather armchair to compliment your sofa – and this offers a lot of flexibility.

Choosing the right colour and style

My advice before venturing out and buying a corner suite is to think about materials and look you wish to achieve in your room. There are many varying options of material and style – some more contemporary than others and some more comfortable than others, so be sure to try them out as well. If you have small children, I would advise you think seriously about getting a leather corner sofa. A leather sofa, if you do have the budget, will last a lifetime and it won’t date. Spillages and stains can be simply wiped off and even though it will cost a little more at the outset, it will make up for your investment.

Leather corner sofas come in varying colours and types of leather so you will still have many options for making it fit in with your style.

A brown leather corner suite looks soft and slick. The rich tones that a brown leather gives out, I feel is warming and it will match any interior. Chocolate browns look stunning with duck egg blues, sage greens, purples and creams. There really is no colour that will not sit comfortably with a brown leather option.

A black leather corner sofa looks just as good – by sticking to these simple colours you will find that they won’t date and they will hide marks a little better than on a red or green leather option. Black leather looks cutting edge and high fashion if contrasted with white and grey making a great either a 1920s style statement or a 1960s bold retro feel. Black and white gives clean and crisp design and teamed with the correct interior will look stunning. Although you may be tempted to make a statement and buy a red leather corner sofa we would recommend to keep the colour simple i.e. black, white or brown and then you can change the decoration every few years instead of coughing up for another sofa!

Not only should you bear in mind the style of the sofa, you should also consider the functionality of it. For example do you frequently have guest over? Perhaps a corner sofa bed would be ideal and you’ll be pleased to hear that there are many leather corner sofa beds on the market.

Caring for your leather sofa

Quite honestly, I would recommend either baby wipes which work really well on getting any grime off and also putting back into the leather some much needed oils and moisture which does get lost over the years. There are protectors on the market, which you will need to coat the sofa in at least once a year but these are more pricey!

Add Flair to your Home with Antique Chest of Drawers

12 Nov

Add Flair to your Home with Antique Chest of Drawers

We are all looking for ways to make our homes a unique reflection of our personalities and tastes. This includes coming up with clever and unusual ideas for storage and organization. Sure, you could go to a box store and purchase storage drawers, dressers, and bedside drawers, but where is the fun in that. Why not put your own stamp on things by adding personality into your home with an antique set of drawers. Restoring a second hand set of drawers is a fun DIY project that will inject some personality and individuality to your home design and give you satisfaction in a job well done.

Many second hand sets of drawers offer beautiful detailing and period design simply not found in the mass market pieces available today. These pieces are often constructed out of high quality materials that have already stood the test of time, so you know you are getting a quality piece. A new oak chest of drawers can cost hundreds of dollars, but if you are willing to restore an older set, you can save money and still get a sturdy piece that will last for years to come. With a little elbow grease, old pieces can easily be restored to their original beauty and give your home not just storage, but a unique flair as well.

If you find a set of white chest of drawers you like, it can make a great addition to a shabby chic decor scheme. Because the shabby chic look is a “lived in” look, it does not matter if the paint is a bit chipped or otherwise imperfect. In fact, it adds to the charm and look of the piece. White chest of drawers also looks great in a country design and if you repaint and refinish the piece, a white chest of drawers looks right at home in a sleek and modern home design, too.

If you find and fall in love with a set of drawers that has a lacquered finish, you may want to consult an expert to help you restore the lacquer. An antique restorer can help you bring the piece back to life and can teach you how to properly clean and care for the piece once you bring it home. Even if you pay someone to refurbish the drawers, it will still likely be less expensive than purchasing a new lacquered piece so you will have money left over in your decorating budget to buy complimentary accessories like lamps and picture frames to display on top of the drawers.

In addition to adding personality into your home, refinishing second hand drawers is a great environmentally friendly choice. By reusing an already existing piece, you save that piece from going into a landfill. You also prevent more trees from being felled for lumber and the burning of fossil fuels to transport and ship the piece first to the store and then to your home. Refinishing old pieces is a perfect example of the environmental message “Reduce, reuse, recycle” in action and can help make your home a bit greener.

There is no end to the creative ways you can use drawers in your home. Use them in the bathroom to store towels and toiletries. By the bedside to house books, alarm clocks, water glasses, reading glasses and telephones. Use them in the bedroom to keep clothes. Put them in the kitchen to store pots, pans and other cooking utensils. Placed outside, they make charming potting tables and plant displays. Narrow drawers are perfect in hallways as use for shoe storage, key and mail organization and decoration. Use them in children’s rooms to keep toys or clothes neat and organized. Craft rooms are a great place to use restored storage drawers to keep all your crafting tools neatly put away yet still close at hand. Use your imagination and there is no end to the creative ways you can find to put storage drawers to good use.

Finding second hand storage drawers is easy. Just visit yard and garage sales, second hand furniture stores, auctions, and for sale ads online or in your local newspaper. Taking the time to find, refinish and refurbish an old piece is fun, affordable and environmentally friendly. It is a great way to show of your design skill and bring a unique touch to your home. Just think how proud you will feel when your friends and family compliment the piece you saved and you can say, “I did it myself!”

Bedside Drawers are a Necessity

29 Oct

Bedside Drawers are a Necessity

Bedside drawers are a necessity rather than an option these days. There are many reasons for this and here are a few of them. One good reason is that it seems to complete the look of a typically well-furnished bedroom, complete with wardrobe, dressing table and lovely big bed framed by bedside drawers that are just right. The idea of just a plain old bed is rather forlorn and incomplete. Bedside drawers can also provide a place to keep another essential bedroom addition – bedside lamps.

When choosing your bedside drawers there are three important factors to keep in mind – the use, the cleaning and the compatibility. Out of these, the use of the bedside drawers is perhaps the most important. Usually bedside drawers are used for storage. What you store in them depends on who you are or more specifically your bedtime rituals and requirements. Do you need water frequently or other hot or cold liquids in the night? If so, the drawer top must be big enough to accommodate a jug or flask and a glass. Are you someone who loves to curl up under the covers with a good book? Your bedside drawers must provide easy access to your favorite reading material and other objects such as your glasses, contact lenses etc. Other articles commonly stored in bedside drawers are tablets, religious books and objects, loose change, nighttime cosmetics, snacks etc. Whatever your need, bedside drawers provide a tidy way of adding extra storage to your bedroom.

The use of the drawers and what is stored will also determine the style, construction and design of the drawer. If you store a lot of heavy or frequently used articles in them, it’s best to get drawers with runners along the edges for easy opening and closing. If you think you will have next to nothing to put in them and are mainly interested in the aesthetic value of bedside drawers, you can get a much smaller and lighter set. If you plan on storing money, watches, ornaments and the like, drawers that have a locking mechanism is a good option.

The next factor in the selection is cleaning. Bedside drawers are usually much neglected when it comes to cleaning in and around them. If you want to avoid problems with dust allergies due to accumulated dirt and grime, pick bedside drawers that allow for easy cleaning. Glass topped surfaces are always easy to dust and keep clean. Pick drawers that stand on legs or can be raised from ground level, to allow for cleaning beneath and behind them. Allow an empty space between the wall and the drawer and align your bed accordingly. Periodically empty out all contents and wipe down the drawers and each of the contents inside. Always keep the contents meticulously organized and arranged. This will prevent you from having to riffle through a big mess every time you need a small pill or pin. Ensure that your bedside drawers always a pleasure to look through.

Once you have taken into account all these above factors, you can have some fun. The final step to finding that perfect set of beside drawers is to match it to what you already have. There are lovely sets available in almost every wood be it an oak chest of drawers, pine, mahogany etc. They also come in natural wood colors or colored according to specification like a pure white chest of drawers or antique chest of drawers. What is important to keep in mind is that the new buy does something good to what is already there. One way to do this is to provide a stark contrast, either in design or in color. Therefore, if you have a largely wood-based bedroom, bedside cabinets made of bamboo or even metal in a solid color can provide an interesting counterpoint. Another way is to find a set that perfectly complements the existing furniture. Therefore, you can try to find the closest match in material, design and color to what you already have. As this can be both exhausting and time consuming, an alternative is to get it custom made by either a well known furniture house or a skilled carpenter.

All this may sound like a lot to take in, but it is really quite simple. All that is needed is a clear idea of what you want, what you need and how much you can afford to spend. Before you know it, you will have the perfect set of bedside drawers.
