The Practical Benefits of Home Solar Panels

The Practical Benefits of Home Solar Panels

Solar panels have been installed on home rooftops for decades, but it’s only recently that they’ve become truly affordable. The change comes from the size of the companies that are producing solar panels. Previously, these panels were produced by small companies that could only manufacture a limited number, and had to sell them to businesses that could afford them. Now that giants like BP and Kyocera are turning how panels at economies of scale, they have the means to make versions specifically for homeowners at competitive prices.

Pricing Home Solar Panels

Most solar panels designed for residential use range between $500 and $1500 each. Under normal circumstances, the ability to quickly comparison shop online is a unilateral advantage for the buyer. However, looking up prices for mini solar panels on the Internet can be a double-edged sword. Many of the prices should will seem too good to be true, in which case it’s critical to look at the fine print. These ultra-low prices frequently indicate a wholesale price that’s only available for quantity orders. That’s not necessarily a deterrent if the house needs several panels that meet the minimum order.

It’s unlikely that one panel will ever be enough for an entire house. Home solar panels are designed to be modular, connected together in series. The power output for each panel will depend on the model, but a common range is 170 to 180 watts at 24 volts to power batteries that store electricity for evening and low-light power supply. Panels are not enough. You’ll need buy an inverter—a device that converts the DC electricity that comes from the panels to AC electricity that can be used by the house wiring.

Grid Tie Systems

One of the advantages of solar energy is that it can be used withing or outside of public utilities. So if you have a farm in a remote location that would otherwise have no access to power, solar systems are the perfect solution. But for most residents, who live on a power grid, they can take advantage of grid tie systems that integrate with the grid. This allows any surplus power generated by the panels to be fed back into the grid and sold to the utility for energy credit. This system of net-metering is one of the key economic benefits of installing solar panels. The Interstate Renewable Energy council maintains a database of federal, state and municipal net-metering programs, as well as any financial incentive programs (like tax credits) for which you might qualify.

Adding Shade to Your Outdoor Living Areas

Adding Shade to Your Outdoor Living Areas

One of the more important aspects of outdoor decor is providing protection from the elements to your home, family, and visitors to the house. There are a myriad of options in how to go about this, and some will be better suited to certain situations than others. To determine which would be best for you and your home, examining how each method would interact with already present (or even planned) features of your landscaping is important. This way you can ensure there is synergy between the features, rather than creating conflicts between them.

One example of how a seemingly benign addition can interfere with the rest of the yard is the traditional umbrella. With a central pole this creates an obstruction to traffic through the shaded area. This is especially true for umbrellas with large bases, like those incorporated into patio tables. While in some cases this isn’t a big deal, and the table itself can benefit greatly from the shade, in other areas it could interfere with foot traffic and make navigating small decks or patios difficult.

In such cases an offset umbrella can make a lot of sense. With the post located outside the perimeter of the canopy, this frees up movement through the shaded area. Also, a cantilever umbrella base can swivel around, moving the canopy in a rather wide arc. This can allow you to adjust the shade cast by the canopy to suit the current activities better. Of course there are some drawbacks to offset or cantilever umbrellas. The main one is that with the arm extending to the canopy, there is increased leverage on the pole and base. This means they have to be more substantial to keep the canopy from tipping over, especially in windy conditions.

For a more substantial solution that also helps to free up the center of the shaded area, you could try a gazebo canopy. Even with extra supports (often 4 vs the 1 for an umbrella), with the posts on the corners of the canopy this still allows free movement through the center of the gazebo. Also, with the possibility to add a gazebo curtain, you can deal with sunlight coming in from the sun when it’s at a lower inclination in the sky.

By moving the support structure of the shade feature to the corners or outside the shaded area, you can help free up movement through the shade. And isn’t that the point? To be able to enjoy the cool shade, rather than having to skirt about it?

Removing Stress from your Time in the Kitchen

Removing Stress from your Time in the Kitchen

Stress can crop up in our lives in many forms and in many places. We have the stress of having to finish our projects on time at our place of employment. We have the stress of having to keep our yards in ship shape even though our time is limited even on the weekends. And there is always the stress of having to contact our parents regularly or they could lay a guilt trip on you for not caring about them. And when it comes to the kitchen there is always the stress of having to come up with another meal to feed the family and getting it cooked on time.

So what can the homeowner do to make time in the kitchen more enjoyable and more stress-free? Well, you might want to start with taking a good look at how your kitchen is organized. Are your cabinets filled with a conglomeration of various food and kitchen items that don’t have any organization? Are your kitchen drawers just a mishmash of unrelated items with no kind of order? How about under that kitchen sink? Do you really know what’s under there? And, of course there is your kitchen countertop. How orderly is it? Does what you have on your kitchen counters make sense as far as how you work in the kitchen?

Start with your kitchen drawers. One by one pull out the drawer and dump everything onto your kitchen table. Throw out everything that you don’t need or at least move out anything that is unrelated to the kitchen. You definitely need something that will help organize those drawers when you start putting everything back into them. You don’t need to go out and purchase custom kitchen drawer organizers. Most drawer organizers these days will expand to fit your kitchen drawers whether they are of a standard dimension or a custom size. They will allow you to put everything in its order and place so that when you need something it will be in an orderly location. This will do wonders to reduce the stress of having to find your favorite whisk or spatula.

You can do the same with your cabinets. Start one by one and remove everything. Place the less used items on the top shelf and the more regularly-used items closer to arm’s length that you can reach easily. Throw out anything that you don’t need or donate any canned goods that you may never use to a homeless shelter or food kitchen.

Then there is your counter space. Removing anything that doesn’t make sense and opening up some valuable real estate on your kitchen counters will reap rewards. Picking up some canister sets for kitchen dry goods will allow those often-used items like sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt to be right at your fingertips. Adding some organization to your counter space will reduce stress levels associated with hunting around for those kitchen items that are used daily for your meals.

Taking some steps to make your kitchen a more organized place should make your kitchen life much more enjoyable. The last place that you need stress is in the kitchen which, for many, is the most important room of your home.

Why a Home Gas Barbecue is Better than Charcoal

Why a Home Gas Barbecue is Better than Charcoal

There is nothing better than the great tradition of American barbecue in your own backyard. If you are old enough, then chances are you grew up with the taste of charcoal barbecue and the authentic way it really brought flavors to life. These days, gas barbecues are outselling their charcoal counterparts at an incredible rate, and it’s rare that you see standard coal BBQs these days in the average home. They have been replaced with far more convenient gas products that offer you a lot more advantages over time. Of course there will still always be room for a good old-fashioned charcoal barbecue meal from time to time, but these days with the added convenience and sheer power of a modern gas grill, there’s really no reason to go back to the past. You can get food that tastes just as good while also being able to cook faster and on larger grill areas.

One of the main advantages to using gas is that you can get down to the action a lot faster. If you use a charcoal barbecue, then you can expect to wait upwards of 20 minutes before the coals even approach optimal cooking temperatures. If you place your food on too quickly, then there’s a good chance it will end up burnt or engulfed by the flames. With a gas barbecue however, all you need is a one touch ignition system to fire things up and you can be cooking within minutes. You also have the ability to control temperatures which is essential if you’re going to be preparing larger amounts of food. Anyone who has ever tried to coordinate a large menu using just a charcoal grill no doubt hard it is to keep things in order. Gas grills also tend to have larger cooking areas and that means you have more room to play around with the varying temperature levels. This is something that you simply don’t get even with the most durable charcoal barbecues around.

No matter which type of barbecue you choose, it’s essential to remember that the process is all about love. When you put more time and energy into the preparation process, you’re going to get better results in each and every time. So make sure that you flavor your food well and spare no expense that using the most fresh ingredients that you can get your hands on. Since barbecue is something you can only do for a few months each year, you should always make the most of every opportunity whenever you can.

Top Seven Fruit and Veg for the Beginner’s Vegetable Garden

Top Seven Fruit and Veg for the Beginner’s Vegetable Garden

So you have finally bought your own house and want to start growing some of your own food – but now comes the question: what should you grow? One option is to start with things you know you will eat. Another is to start with things that grow easily that you can learn to eat, if you don’t already. Still a third optionof course is to find things that you already eat and that grow easily. Try asking your neighbours what grows well for them – chances are, you have similar soil and conditions. But if you want my advice…

First, think about fruit. Planting fruit trees now means fruit for years down the track. But fruit trees tend to take at least a couple of years to produce, so the sooner you get them in the better. Consider planting blueberry bushes for a fruit that is delicious and tends to be quite expensive to buy fresh – and is easy to grow, as long as you can provide the right conditions, namely, enough water through the growing season, a good amount of sunlight (they do tolerate partial shade) and an acid soil. For fruit that will be read this season pop in several strawberry plants. They also like a fairly acid soil, and will do well with a mulch of pine needles or shredded pine bark. Just be sure to put a number of snail traps around (beer in a bowl dug into the ground will do) if you want all those strawberries for yourself.

Now as for vegetables, nothing is easier than growing green beans. And, they are so delicious snapped straight off the plant, you may never get them to the stove! You can choose bush or climbing varieties, but climbing beans will be easier to harvest. Complete your beginner vegetable garden with a few varieties of tomatoes, some pick and pick again lettuces like cos (just be sure not to let them dry out), some silverbeet – which self-seeds if you let one or two plants flower and go to seed – or some New Zealand perennial spinach (also called warrigal greens).

There are dozens more easily grown vegetables to choose from, from root vegetables like carrot or potato or onions to pumpkins and squash and sweet corn. Which ones you choose will depend on how much room you have as well as what you like to cook. But just with these few to begin, you have a garden that will give you fresh food either to cook with or eat in a salad, throughout the summer months. So what are you waiting for? Go to it!

What Are The Advantages Of Going Solar?

What Are The Advantages Of Going Solar?

Among the many advantages of solar power, the most important to you will be either the financial savings of installing your own equipment, or the environmental benefits. Truth be told, for many people the environmental benefits are a a handy bonus on the financial rewards. No matter what your motivation though, by implementing solar energy in your home, you are doing the right thing for the planet and your wallet.

The green reasons for going solar include the fact that the energy from the sun is sustainable, in that it does not involve the mining or consumption of a finite terrestrial resource. In other words, we are not burning up something on this planet that we will run out of. Apart from sustainable, the production of solar power is also no polluting, as opposed to existing forms of power generation which feeds the power grids of countries all over the world.

The fact that energy generation using solar power is not polluting leads us to the practical advantages of your own solar equipment at home – the equipment is silent and requires little to no maintenance with a minute risk of breakdown. This is due to the fact that there are no moving parts in general solar power generation equipment, which consists of one or more solar panels wired up to a battery unit or the electrical circuit of the household. Other solar equipment which is not concerned with the conversion of solar energy to electrical energy such as the standard solar pool cover is also a stationary unit. No moving parts equals no hassles.

Finally, but not least important are the financial aspects. In terms of the initial purchase and installation of solar equipment, the cost has come down a lot from previous levels. In addition, the existence of subsidies and cash back offers from governments has brought the technology within reach of most home owners. The ongoing savings thanks to the reduced use of the energy from the power grid is a very important factor in calculating the cost of the equipment as well.

A reduced reliance on the grid means lower power bills – and obviously the more energy you generate yourself, the less you use from the grid. Exciting isn’t it? Really, if you install a bunch of panels at home and have them hardwired into your home circuit together with a meter and monitoring, there is no reason why you cannot sell excess energy you generate back to the grid for a tidy profit. This makes going solar not just a feel good environmental decision, but a fantastic business decision.

Decorating Tips for the Patio

Decorating Tips for the Patio

Aside from the living room, the patio is one area of the house that plays an important role in accepting visitors or guests into the house. Of course, before the guests get into the house itself, they often have to pass through the patio so this is the most important area of your house when it comes to making a good first impression. Even if your patio is in the back, it is likely within the view of your neighbors and therefore keeping it looking nice is vital to maintaining an overall good impression.

Think of your patio as being like the cover of a book from which people will base their judgments about what is inside. So even if you do not have a luxurious house, a good looking patio can compensate for that. This is why making it neat and attractive is a big deal and that it should be always part of the overall home decoration. Here are some decorating tips for a great looking patio.

First of all, create a draft or plan of what you want your patio to look like. You can either keep the image of that plan in your mind or draw it on a piece of paper. Having a plan or sketch of your plan will help you narrow your ideas into something important when decorating your patio. Take measurements and mark them down so you will have a handy reference point when you go shopping for furniture and decorations.

One of the things that you have to think about is the space of your patio. This is one situation where size definitely matters. This is to prevent situations like placing huge rattan couch on a patio with a space more suited to a couple of small chairs or benches. Beautiful furniture like a soft sofa seat is not really necessary. Why? Because no matter how amazing it looks, if you’re short on space it will be too much. Furniture on patios doesn’t have to be luxurious. A simple wooden bench is just fine if your patio is smaller. It will definitely save space and you can still spruce up the area using smaller decorations like potted plants and wall hangings.

If your family wants a little privacy, patio privacy screens will be a great help. Many of the screens you find in stores are beautiful but don’t be put off by the prices if your budget is small. You can pick up room dividers cheap for this purpose or you can make your own. Aside from that, you can also plant tall grasses or shrubs on the surroundings of the patio. Grow them and trim them into something that would cover the patio from passersby. These shrubs are not only helpful in providing privacy but they also give fresh air in the area. If bushes do not fit with the surroundings of your patio and your family badly wants to have privacy then making fences is another option.

Hanging pots with flowers like orchids on the wall or ceiling of the patio is one way to add beauty to the patio. They take up such little space yet add so much color and life to the area. Not only are they pleasing to the eyes but they filter the air of the area as well.

Above all, always keep your patio neat and clean. Remember, even if the patio looks plain and simple, as long as it is clean and well-kept, it will still look great.

How Much You Should Expect to Pay for an Inground Pool

How Much You Should Expect to Pay for an Inground Pool

Building a pool involves a serious amount of planning and consideration of multiple expenses. For a better understanding of this process we will take a look at everything from construction, pool options, and additional costs to consider. Please read on, so you can make an informed decision in this matter.

Construction

The first step in estimating the cost of your pool is in reviewing the construction process from start to finish. Let’s do this briefly. First there’s design, choosing the shape, depth and whatever customizations you would like to have (this is a bit extra but worth considering). Once you decide on this, the next step is finding a pool installer, who will inform you if there are any regulations in your state that need to be considered for costs. Broadly speaking, this could be an annual permit from $500 to $700, and maybe a $1000 initial inspection.

When construction takes place, the basic process is excavation, and final installation. This is, the pool itself, plumbing and electrical services required. Inground pool prices can seem high, but when you take a closer look at the work to be done, you get a better grasp of your investment.

Choosing prefabricated or custom

You have the option of a prefabricated pool, or you can have it built to your specific requirements. For the first choice, you will have limited options for shape, but it will be considerably less expensive ($8000 for a 15′ X 30′ for example). These pre-made pools are usually made of fiberglass, and have good durability.

The second choice involves having your pool built by hand. There are two options within this realm, first you can have a concrete or sand floor covered by a vinyl liner (expect it to cost $18,000 to $20,000 for a 15′ X 30′), or have your floor and walls made out of gunite (a type of concrete used for pool construction), which can cost between $25,000 to $30,000.

Factor in additional costs

Additional costs to consider are maintenance costs, chemicals and treatments for water. You’ll need to run the filter which will have an electrical cost, and so will swimming pool lights if you choose to have them installed. If you would like to customize your pool even further with tile, it could cost several thousand extra. Finally, extras like heating, diving boards or even swimming pool toys should also be factored in.

Besides the investment for the construction of the pool, consider that it will require your attention for maintenance. This process shouldn’t be difficult for you to grasp, and it won’t take much of your time if you take preventive measures. For all your hard work and investment, in return you will get an endless source of fun for your family and friends.

Garden Nets – Protection For Your Plants

Garden Nets – Protection For Your Plants

Gardening can bring peace and enjoyment to one’s life. But keeping your garden plants beautiful and healthy can be a lot of trouble especially with all the problems that can happen to your garden. It can be disappointing to work so hard in your garden only to have it ruined by pests who feasts on your plants and produce and the harsh weather that can leave your plants lifeless. One beneficial way to handle these problems is by using garden nets.

Garden nets are available in many types depending on the problem you are trying to remedy. A great way to deal with garden pest without using pesticides that can harm your health and the environment is with the use of garden nets. Choosing the right type of garden net for your pest problems is only a matter of knowing what kind of pest you are trying to keep out of your garden.

Garden bird nettings are used to keep birds away from your fruits especially your berries which are their favorite. They do not totally keep the birds out of your garden, but what they do is encourage the birds to eat at the bird feeder instead of devouring your garden produce. A garden insect net will keep those insects that are trying to eat the leaves of your plants and also those vegetables. The mesh is finer than that of a garden bird net since insects are so much smaller. But if dealing with much larger pests like rabbits or a deer, a much stronger garden net should be used to be able to withstand their attacks.

Another problem that gardeners are faced with aside from garden pests is the harsh weather conditions. Garden shade netting, as its name implies, will provide shade to gardens located in places with warmer climates and also gardens that do not have that much natural shade to shield their plants from the sun’s intense rays. They help block the UV rays that can be damaging to plants without obstructing the airflow. They can also be used during the cold weather to protect your plants from frost and as a windbreaker.

Using garden nets will allow you to deal with problems such as pest infestations and the unpredictable weather without sacrificing the health of your plants and also your budget. They are very affordable and easy to install. You can use rods to support the nets or just simply drape them over the plants. Garden nets are durable enough to keep in your garden even as the season changes but are also easy to fold and store away.
