A glass cabinet is a great idea!

We all like to collect objects d’art and small things that mean something to us. We tend to pick these items up when we are on holiday and we want a keepsake, or we get handed down family heirlooms that need particular looking after. It really is nice to have bits and bobs around the home, as that is what makes a house a home, it is just nice if we can put them somewhere that we know is going to be safe and out of reach of pets and children and lessens the amount of dust that inevitably settles on them over time.
The best idea for collating all your special pieces is in a simple glass display cabinet. There are so many benefits to purchasing a glass cabinet. Here we have listed a few:
- It keeps things dust free – This is important if you don’t wish to spend all your free time with a feather duster in your hands. We all spend a great deal of time working and making sure the children have got everything that they need, that we do not want to spend anymore of our precious free moments doing any more boring tasks. This is frankly time that we could spend with our loved ones or time spent to ourselves curling up with a good book or even treating ourselves to a much needed bath. By collating all of the difficult-to-dust pieces in an enclosed cabinet, it will save you this time and free it up for other things. Take a good look around your home and try to keep things that are out on display such as books to a minimum. We all have books in our houses and this is a particular hotspot for the accumulation of dust. You can now get book shelves that have an enclosed glass frontage so that you are able to look after them.
- Display – Displaying things in suitable surroundings gives them room to breathe and they tend to not get lost behind other things. These items are precious, so why not give them the respect that they deserve and place them in a glamorous glass display cabinet so that everyone can enjoy them.
- Keep breakages to a minimum – We all know that if things are left around and about; the pet cat will curl up on your favorite antique teddy, it will also sharpen it’s claws on your best novel and anything that is made from a precious material will get flung to the floor when it flicks it’s tails around. These are facts, so to stop any unnecessary breakages place them in a glass cabinet so that they are safe from harm. I know that I have blamed the cat for a fair few of these breakages but we are all also to blame, as the majority of breakages occur when we are cleaning. So apologies to the cat!
- Protect – A glass cabinet is added protection to your precious items. Glass cabinets can now be purchased with toughened glass which is an all-round positive feature if you want peace of mind that they will always be safe. Toughened glass acts as a safety factor as well if you do have small children and bouncy dogs in your home. It may set you back a little more but you will have peace of mind all round. Whilst on the subject of protection, you may wish to consider a lock and key as well to maximize the safety of your keepsakes.
Ways to make your glass cabinet sparkle
Glass is a fantastic light reflector and if you wanted to make more of a feature of your glass cabinet then why not go for one with fitted light fixtures. Alternatively, you can now buy down lights from any good home store or online (which usually works out a lot cheaper) and fit them into the cabinet yourself. Glass display cabinets look great in a lounge and with the correct lighting you can achieve a really expensive look for very little cost. There are LED lights that are easy to install and do not require any wiring or you could simply fit some down lights and pass the wire through the back of the cabinet to achieve a warmer light effect.
If you already have a glass display cabinet then you may want to try and update the look of your cabinet with some newer, fresher and more contemporary glass cabinet knobs. This little detail instantly lifts a tired design and if you have been passed one down in the family it can be a great way to save a bit of cash and work with what you already have!
When purchasing a glass cabinet think about the proportions of it too, if you are limited on space then you may want to think about a corner unit which will give you more usable floor space and won’t eat into your room quite so much as a square proportioned unit. A well proportioned unit looks more in-keeping and more expensive than an ill-thought out one.
